The bus to La Fortuna leaves from Terminal Atlántico Norte, on Calle 12 between Avenidas 7 and 9. It’s about 450 meters north of Parque La Merced in downtown San José.
Buses to La Fortuna used to leave from Terminal 7-10, and plenty of guides still say so. That terminal has closed, and the San Carlos and La Fortuna buses moved back to Atlántico Norte.
Take a taxi or Uber to the terminal, especially in the early morning or with luggage. It’s a short ride from most downtown hotels.
The area is busy and a bit rough around the edges. Keep your bag in front of you and your phone in your pocket.

The main direct bus from San José to La Fortuna leaves at 8:40 AM every day. It stops briefly in towns like Naranjo and Ciudad Quesada on the way. You reach La Fortuna about 4 to 4.5 hours later.
Some days there’s also an earlier departure, but times change and sources don’t agree. Ask your hotel or call the terminal the day before, especially around Christmas and Easter week.
Aim to arrive about 30 minutes early on weekdays and 45 minutes early on weekends. The direct bus can sell out, and there’s no assigned seating on some buses.
There’s no night bus. The last useful connections through Ciudad Quesada run in the early evening.

Missed the direct bus? The Ciudad Quesada route is easy and runs all day. Ciudad Quesada is also called San Carlos, and that’s the name you’ll see on the buses.
Buses from Terminal Atlántico Norte to Ciudad Quesada leave about every half hour from 5 AM to 6 PM. The ride takes about 3 to 3.5 hours.
From the Ciudad Quesada terminal, local buses run to La Fortuna roughly every hour until late evening. That last leg takes 1 to 1.5 hours, and the fare is about ₡1,700.
Watch your bags while you change buses. The Ciudad Quesada terminal is busy, and it’s the one place on this trip to keep a closer eye on things.
Getting to the Bus From San José Airport
No bus to La Fortuna leaves from San José airport. The simplest way is a taxi or Uber into the city to Terminal Atlántico Norte. That takes about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic.
Some buses to Ciudad Quesada also stop on La Radial in Alajuela, about 10 minutes from the airport by taxi. Ask your driver for the stop, and expect to change in Ciudad Quesada.
Land in the afternoon? You’ll likely miss the direct bus. Spend the night near the airport or in San José and take the morning bus. Or book a shuttle from the airport instead.
What the Bus Ride to La Fortuna Is Like
The bus to La Fortuna is a regular public bus, not a tourist coach. Seats are basic, the air-conditioning may or may not work, and there’s no Wi-Fi to count on.
Large bags go in the hold under the bus, and small ones overhead or by your feet. Use the terminal bathroom before you board, since the stops along the way are short.
The ride is pretty, with coffee farms, small towns and cloud forest on the climb past San Ramón. Keep your phone and wallet on you at every stop.
In La Fortuna, the bus pulls into the small terminal next to the Megasuper. It’s a block south of the church and central park. Most hotels in town are a short walk or a cheap taxi away.
Other Ways to Get From San José to La Fortuna
The bus isn’t for everyone, and the other options aren’t that much more for one or two people. A shared shuttle costs about $50 to $65 per person and picks you up at your hotel or the airport.
A private transfer starts around $180 for a van that fits up to 6. For a group of four, that works out cheaper per person than shuttle seats.
A rental car gives you the most freedom once you’re there. Sansa also flies to La Fortuna in about 30 minutes, for about $95 to $155 one way.
