How to Get From San Jose Airport to Santa Teresa
Getting from San Jose airport to Santa Teresa takes longer than the map suggests. The Gulf of Nicoya is in the way. So the trip is either a drive plus a ferry ride, or a long loop around the gulf by road.
By ferry, most people get there in 5 to 6 hours. A short flight to Cóbano cuts that to about 2, for a price. The best pick depends on when you land, your budget and how much gear you’re bringing.

How Far Is Santa Teresa From San Jose Airport?
Santa Teresa is about 150 to 185 km from San Jose airport on the ferry route. That means about 2 hours of driving to Puntarenas, a 70-minute crossing to Paquera, then roughly an hour on to Santa Teresa.
The land route skips the ferry. You head north on Route 1, cross the Friendship Bridge over the Tempisque River, then drive down the Nicoya Peninsula. It’s about 270 km and takes 6 to 7 hours.
Most shuttles and buses use the ferry. Prices shift a little by company and season, but this is roughly what each option costs:
| Option | Price | Time | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shared shuttle | $50 to $75 per person | 5 to 6.5 hours | Solo and couples |
| Private transfer | $240 to $450 per vehicle | About 5 hours | Groups and late flights |
| Public bus | About ₡9,100 ($20), ferry included | About 5.5 hours, plus a night in San Jose | Tight budgets |
| Rental car | Daily rate, fuel and ferry | 5 to 7 hours | Exploring the peninsula |
| Flight to Cóbano | About $120 to $180 | 30 to 40 minutes, plus a short taxi | Short trips |
The ferry timetable shapes almost everything else, so it’s worth a look before you book.
Puntarenas to Paquera Ferry
The Naviera Tambor ferry crosses from Puntarenas to Paquera eight times a day. Boats leave at 4 AM, 6:30 AM, 9 AM, noon, 3 PM, 6 PM, 8 PM and 10 PM. The crossing takes about 70 minutes.
Fares are cheap. A foot passenger pays ₡810, under $2. A car costs ₡12,882, and the driver pays the ₡810 passenger fare on top. That comes to around $30. Each extra person in the car pays ₡810 too.
You can buy tickets online through QuickPayCR, but only a limited number are sold that way. The rest go at the ticket window in Puntarenas.
Arrive about an hour early with a ticket, and earlier without one. On holiday weekends, Christmas and Easter, cars can wait two or three boats, so leave plenty of buffer.

Shared Shuttle From San Jose Airport to Santa Teresa
A shared shuttle is the easy middle ground. A van picks you up outside arrivals, handles the ferry and drops you at your hotel in Santa Teresa.
Expect to pay $50 to $75 per person, ferry included. Tropical Tours charges $60 and leaves the airport at 6 AM and 3 PM. Interbus charges about $67 to $76 and runs a morning and an afternoon van.
How the ferry works depends on the company. Some vans drive onto the boat with you. Others drop you at the dock, you cross on foot, and a second van meets you in Paquera.
The trip takes 5 to 6.5 hours. Book 2 to 3 days ahead, and a week ahead over Christmas and Easter. Land after about 2 PM and you can miss the last van of the day.

Private Transfer From San Jose Airport to Santa Teresa
A private transfer costs more, but it takes the stress out of a long first day. The driver meets you in arrivals, tracks your flight and leaves when you’re ready.
Prices run about $240 to $450 for the vehicle. Tropical Tours charges $240 for up to 4 people when you cross the ferry on foot and switch vans. It’s $340 when the same van rides the ferry with you.
For a family of four, $240 works out to $60 each, about the same as four shuttle seats. With small kids or a pile of luggage, the same van all the way is worth the extra.
Ask about late pickups too. Some companies add a fee for pickups between 9 PM and 6 AM.

Bus From San Jose to Santa Teresa
The bus is the budget pick, but it doesn’t suit an airport arrival. Transportes Cóbano runs one bus a day from San Jose to Cóbano and Santa Teresa, and it leaves at 6 AM.
That bus leaves from the TIG terminal on Paseo Colón in downtown San Jose, about 150 meters west of the children’s hospital. Older guides still say Terminal 7-10, but that terminal has closed.
The fare is about ₡9,100, roughly $20, with the ferry included, and the ride takes about 5.5 hours. You can buy tickets online through La Terminal or Bookaway, or at the window.
Check when you buy if your bus runs through to Santa Teresa or ends in Cóbano. If it ends there, a local bus covers the last stretch. Either way, you need a night in San Jose first to catch a 6 AM departure.

Driving From San Jose Airport to Santa Teresa
Driving gives you the most freedom, and Santa Teresa is spread out enough that a car helps. From the airport, take Route 27 west to Caldera, then follow the signs to the ferry dock in Puntarenas.
Expect a few toll booths on Route 27, about $5 or less in total. Most booths take colones and cards.
From Paquera, it’s about an hour through Cóbano to Santa Teresa. The main road is paved most of the way, but the last stretch into town is rough and dusty. The hillside roads are dirt.
An SUV with good clearance is the safe pick, and a 4×4 helps in rainy season, May to November. There’s no gas station in Santa Teresa itself, so fill up in Cóbano.

Flying From San Jose Airport to Santa Teresa
Flying is by far the fastest option. Sansa and Costa Rica Green Airways both fly from San Jose airport to Cóbano (ACO) in 30 to 40 minutes. It’s the closest airstrip to Santa Teresa.
Flights leave several times a day, between early morning and late afternoon. One-way fares cost about $120 to $180.
The Cóbano airstrip is about 10 km from Santa Teresa, a 15 to 30 minute taxi ride. Older guides mention flights to Tambor, but the scheduled flights now go to Cóbano.
Luggage is the catch. Green Airways includes 30 pounds (14 kg) of checked luggage on its basic fare, and surfboards cost extra on both airlines. With a morning landing, it’s worth it on a short trip.

Best Way to Get From San Jose Airport to Santa Teresa
For most people, a shared shuttle is the sweet spot. It handles the ferry, drops you at your door and costs about $60.
Book a private transfer for groups of four or more, families with small kids, or flights that land after 2 PM. Fly when time matters more than money and you’re packing light.
Rent a car when you want to see more of the peninsula, like Montezuma or Mal País. Skip the bus on arrival day, since it means a night in San Jose first.
