Yoga in Santa Teresa: Studios, Prices and Retreats
Yoga in Santa Teresa is a big part of daily life, right alongside surfing. Most classes happen on open-air decks at hotels and surf lodges, and nearly all of them take drop-ins. A single class costs about $14 to $20.
You don’t need a retreat to get a lot out of it. All you need is a couple of good studios, a class pass and mornings planned around the waves. With that, a week here can easily hold all the yoga you could want.

Is Santa Teresa Good for Yoga?
Santa Teresa is a great place for yoga, once you understand what kind of town it is. It’s a surf town first, so the yoga scene grew up around the surfers, and you can tell from the timetables.
Most classes run in the early morning or late afternoon, when the heat eases off. Believe Surf & Yoga alone runs more than 10 classes a day across its two decks.
The studios are spread along one long main road that links Mal País, Santa Teresa and Playa Hermosa. Plan on walking, cycling or taking a short taxi ride to class.
Fair warning, though: Santa Teresa is busy, young and a little noisy in high season. For a quieter trip where yoga comes first, Nosara is the better fit.

Best Yoga Studios in Santa Teresa
There are plenty of decks to choose from, but a handful stand out for regular drop-in classes and clear, published prices. One thing to know first: older lists still mention Florblanca, but the resort has closed, so skip it.
Horizon Yoga Hotel
Horizon Yoga Hotel is up on the hillside above town, with a panoramic ocean-view deck. Classes are Vinyasa Flow and Fusion Flow, and all levels can join.
The deck is at the highest point of the hotel. From your mat, you look out over the ocean, Santa Teresa and Mal País. Reviewers especially love the sunset class, when you can watch the sun go down over the whole coastline. The hotel is away from the noisy main road, but the beach is only about a 3-minute walk down the hill.
A drop-in costs $20, or you can buy 4 classes for $60, 8 for $100 or 15 for $150. Private classes are $90, and prenatal classes can be arranged on request.
The schedule changes every week, so check Horizon’s Instagram for times before you walk up the hill. Spots are limited and only guaranteed when you prepay, so book on WhatsApp or get there 10 to 15 minutes early.

Zeneidas Surf Garden
Zeneidas Surf Garden has an oceanfront deck and the most surfer-friendly timetable in town. There are two 75-minute classes every day, Ashtanga at 7:30 AM and Vinyasa at 9:00 AM, both open to all levels.
Zeneidas is a hostel right on the beach, which is rare in Santa Teresa. After class, you can roll up your mat and walk straight into the ocean. The crowd is a little older and calmer than at the party hostels in town. Plenty of people come just for the yoga, and there’s parking on site when you drive over.
A class costs $14 for non-guests and $10 when you’re staying there. That makes it the cheapest regular drop-in we found in Santa Teresa.

Believe Surf & Yoga
Believe Surf & Yoga runs two decks with more than 10 classes a day between them. They’re spread across the morning and late afternoon. Every class is open to beginners, and some are donation-based, with the money going to local community causes.
It’s a surf and yoga lodge with a pool and a restaurant, a 2-minute walk from La Lora beach. Reviewers love the variety of classes, and people on their own say it’s easy to make friends here.
Staying a while? Ask about the monthly membership. It gives you one class a day, 10% off at the restaurant and free use of the showers. Prices aren’t published online, so check the details at the front desk.
Address: 150 meters north of Lora Amarilla, Santa Teresa, Puntarenas, Costa Rica

Funky Monkey Lodge
Funky Monkey Lodge has a jungle deck with daily yoga and aerial silk classes for all levels. You don’t have to stay there to join, and private sessions are available too.
The lodge has been around since 2001. It’s a short walk up the hill off the main road, which keeps it quiet. Guests often wake up to monkeys in the trees, and there’s a pool for after class. The beach is about five minutes away on foot, with lots of places to eat nearby.
Times and prices aren’t online, so message the lodge on WhatsApp or ask at reception the day before.

Casa Zen Guesthouse and Yoga Center
Casa Zen is a guesthouse about 1.2 km from the center of Santa Teresa. It has its own yoga deck and a daily class. It’s a good pick for a simple, budget-friendly stay with yoga built into your morning.
The beach is only a minute or two away, and there’s a supermarket right across the street. You also get hammocks, two shared kitchens and a simple breakfast with fruit and coffee. Reviews on the service are mixed. Still, one reviewer, a yoga teacher too, called the deck beautiful and the teachers good. Guests mention fans rather than AC, so nights can get warm.
The 13% tax is paid in cash on arrival, so plan for that.
Address: Casa Zen Beach Access Road, Santa Teresa, Puntarenas, Costa Rica

Indigo Yoga Resort in Mal País
Indigo Yoga Resort is in Mal País, at the quieter southern end of the area. It focuses on retreats and teacher trainings, plus daily yoga, surf and stand-up paddle. It hosts 200-hour teacher trainings, with recent programs held in January and February.
It’s about 10 minutes from Santa Teresa, in a calm spot close to the beach. You can stay in suites, cottages or villas, and some villas have small kitchens that work well for families. There’s a pool with hammocks, and the breakfast gets great reviews. Guests do say the beach nearby isn’t good for swimming, though.
It’s the place to look at when you want to train as a teacher, not just drop in for a class.
Address: 2 km south of the Playa Carmen intersection, Mal País, Puntarenas, Costa Rica

Yoga Retreats in Santa Teresa: Prices and What’s Included
A yoga retreat bundles your room, daily classes and usually some meals into one price. Santa Teresa has plenty to pick from. BookRetreats lists more than 20 in the area.
Most run 5 or 7 days. Short 5-day, 4-night retreats start around $749, while most 7-day programs cost $1,500 to $2,100. Luxury options reach about $3,000.
What’s included varies a lot. Surf lessons are the extra most often left out. Flights and airport transfers are almost never part of the price. Read the list carefully before you pay.
A retreat suits solo trips and first-timers who want everything organized. It suits surf-first trips less, since the schedule is set for you.
Yoga Retreat or Drop-in Classes in Santa Teresa?
Most people do better with drop-in classes in Santa Teresa, because the town is set up for it. You choose a hotel you like, surf when the waves are good and take a class most mornings.

How to Fit Yoga Around Surfing in Santa Teresa
Yoga and surfing go hand in hand here. The trick is planning your classes around the tide, not the other way around.
A good rhythm is a stronger class before you paddle out and a slower one after. Zeneidas Surf Garden builds its schedule this way, with Ashtanga at 7:30 AM to warm up. Then Vinyasa at 9:00 AM opens tight hips and shoulders after a morning surf.
Late afternoon classes, like the ones at Believe, work well on days when the tide is better early. Check the tide chart the night before and plan around it.
Skip a hard power class right before a long session, since tired shoulders and big sets aren’t a great mix. Our 3-day Santa Teresa itinerary shows how to fit both into a short trip.

Best Time for Yoga in Santa Teresa
Classes run all year in Santa Teresa, but the dry season, December to April, is the busiest and sunniest time to go. That’s when retreats fill up and visiting teachers run workshops, so book retreats a couple of months ahead.
Green season, May to November, brings afternoon rain, but the mornings are often clear, which suits early classes. Prices drop, and the town gets noticeably quieter.
September and October are the wettest months, so check studio schedules before you plan your week around a specific class. Our guide to the best time to travel to Costa Rica breaks it down month by month.
Santa Teresa or Nosara for Yoga?
Santa Teresa and Nosara are the two big yoga towns on the Nicoya Peninsula, and they feel quite different once you’re there.
Nosara is quieter and more spread out, and yoga is the main event. It’s home to Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort and the Nosara Yoga Institute, which is best known for its teacher trainings.
Santa Teresa is younger, busier and surf-first, with yoga fitted around the waves. It’s also cheaper day to day, with a full breakfast at around $9 to $12 compared with $12 to $15 in Nosara.
Choose Nosara when yoga is the point of the trip, and see our guide to the best things to do in Nosara. Choose Santa Teresa when you want surf, nightlife and a class most mornings.

What to Bring to a Yoga Class in Santa Teresa
Most studios in Santa Teresa lend mats, but it’s worth asking when you message them, especially at smaller decks. A few other things make the class easier:
- A travel mat, if you’re picky about grip
- A small towel, since open-air decks get hot and humid
- Water and cash for the class
- Bug spray for jungle decks, especially at sunset
Wear light, quick-dry clothes, since you’ll often walk to class on a hot, sometimes dusty road. Arrive about 10 minutes early in high season, because the best spots on small decks go first.
