Where to Stay Near San José Airport: Alajuela, Cariari or the Hills?

The hotels near SJO fall into five rough areas. The right one depends on your flight time and how much of a night you want.

• Next to the airport: the Hampton and Holiday Inn Express are about 1 km from the terminal, with free 24-hour shuttles. Best for very early or very late flights.
• Alajuela town: a few minutes’ drive from the terminal, with budget beds, sodas and the Courtyard near City Mall.
• Río Segundo and Ciruelas: quiet neighborhoods a few kilometers from the terminal, with small B&Bs and guesthouses.
• Cariari: about 10 to 15 minutes toward San José, with a couple of family-friendly hotels.
• The hills of Alajuela and Heredia: coffee farms, gardens and views, a bit farther out. Best for a relaxed first or last night.

Luxury Hotels Near San José Airport

The best stays near the airport aren’t next to the runway at all. They’re up in the hills of Alajuela and Heredia, with gardens, coffee and big views. They make a great first or last night.

1. Xandari Resort & Spa

Xandari is the splurge, a resort of 24 villas in the hills above Alajuela, about 20 minutes from the airport. About 4 km of marked trails wind through the grounds to waterfalls, and the coffee is grown on site.

The spa has five private, palm-roofed huts, each with its own hot tub. There are also lap pools, a heated outdoor hot tub and yoga in the studio. Breakfast is included, and the terrace restaurant looks out over the Central Valley.

Rates run about $200 to $300 a night. Xandari doesn’t advertise an airport shuttle, so book a transfer or taxi ahead of time.

2. Finca Rosa Blanca Coffee Farm and Inn

Finca Rosa Blanca is a working coffee farm in Santa Bárbara de Heredia, about 8.5 km from the airport. It’s the pick when you want your last night in Costa Rica to feel like part of the trip.

Rooms have handcrafted furniture and patios or decks, and some come with a private hot tub. There’s an outdoor pool, a Latin fusion restaurant that uses produce from its greenhouse, and coffee tours on the farm.

Rates run about $280 to $580 a night, cheapest in October and priciest in March. Ask about the coffee tour time when you check in.

3. Buena Vista Chic Hotel

Buena Vista Chic is up in the mountains above Alajuela, and it lives up to its name. Depending on the room, you look out over the gardens, the pool, the Central Valley or the volcanoes.

The airport shuttle is free both ways, and breakfast is included. Dinner is at Metamorphosis, the restaurant and bar, inside or out on the pool deck. More than 100 bird species have been spotted on the grounds.

Deluxe rooms start around $128 a night and Luxury Villas around $200. That’s a lot of view for the money.

4. Hotel Bougainvillea

Hotel Bougainvillea is an independent hotel in Santo Domingo de Heredia, set in about 10 acres of botanical gardens. It’s farther from the airport than the Alajuela hotels, so leave extra time for traffic.

There’s a pool, a tennis court and garden paths for an evening stroll, and the Vitrales restaurant is popular with locals too. Breakfast is included when you book direct.

Rates run about $110 to $240 a night, and the hotel’s own site runs regular promotions. It’s a calm, green spot to start or end a trip.

Mid-Range Hotels Near San José Airport

The chain hotels near the airport are the easy choice for a night before a flight. Most run free shuttles and include breakfast, and rooms run about $100 to $170.

5. Hampton Inn & Suites San José Airport

The Hampton is right across from the airport, so you can’t sleep much closer to the terminal. Its free shuttle runs 24 hours a day, every 15 minutes, so even a 2 AM arrival is easy.

A hot breakfast is included, and there’s a fitness center and an outdoor pool. Fair warning: the pool isn’t heated, and some guests find it chilly.

Rates run about $105 to $170 a night. For a short night before a dawn flight, it’s hard to beat.

6. Holiday Inn Express San José Airport

Holiday Inn Express is about 1 km east of the airport, with a free shuttle that runs 24 hours. Pickups leave from the arrivals area, at parking lot 80.

The free breakfast buffet has hot and cold options. When you leave too early to eat, you can ask the day before for a to-go snack. There’s an outdoor pool, open 8 AM to 10 PM.

Rates run around $160 a night. It’s simple, reliable and close, which is all you need before a flight.

7. Courtyard San José Airport Alajuela

Courtyard is about 4 km from the airport in Alajuela, close to City Mall, Mango Plaza and Plaza Real Alajuela. That makes it handy for dinner or last-minute shopping.

The free shuttle runs about every 30 minutes, 4 AM to 12:45 AM, with no booking needed. There’s an outdoor pool, and Centro, the restaurant, serves breakfast and dinner with tropical cocktails.

Marriott doesn’t list a set rate, so check your dates. Mind the shuttle gap between about 1 AM and 4 AM before you book a very late arrival.

8. Adventure Inn

Adventure Inn is a friendly independent hotel in Ciudad Cariari, about 10 to 15 minutes from the airport. Its free shuttle picks up arrivals 24 hours a day, and departures leave on the hour, 3 AM to noon.

There’s a solar-heated pool and a hot tub, and the hot breakfast buffet at the Moon Glow Bar & Grill is included. Leaving before 6 AM? You get a boxed snack instead. Dogs and cats can stay in some rooms for $10 a night plus tax.

Standard rooms with two or three queen beds start around $99, and Jacuzzi suites around $119. Book direct for a 10% discount.

9. Country Inn & Suites San José

Country Inn & Suites is a big hotel in the Cariari area, a few minutes from the airport. It has two pools, a restaurant and bar, and a buffet breakfast.

Executive rooms come with breakfast in a private lounge, and recent guests liked the included breakfast on a one-night stay. The airport shuttle isn’t listed as a standard service, so check before you book.

Rates start around $125 a night. With two pools, it’s a good pick for families on a short stopover.

10. Hotel Robledal

Hotel Robledal is a small, leafy hotel in El Roble, about 400 meters west of the church. The airport is roughly 8 km away. It feels more like a garden hideaway than an airport hotel, and it’s a nice pick with kids.

There are just 13 rooms, plus an outdoor pool and a separate kids’ pool. Lenchos, the family restaurant, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and has a kids’ menu, and breakfast is included.

The airport shuttle is free, 5 AM to 10:30 PM, but you need to book it at least 48 hours ahead. Rates run about $110 to $135 a night.

Budget Hotels Near San José Airport

Budget stays near the airport are in Alajuela town and the quiet neighborhoods around the terminal. Expect about $14 for a dorm bed and $65 to $100 for a private room, often with breakfast.

11. Hotel La Guaria Inn & Suites

La Guaria is a good-value hotel in central Alajuela, about 200 meters east of the Municipal Theater. It’s also a short walk from the Central Park. The airport is about 3 km away, roughly a 7-minute drive.

There are 25 rooms in three buildings, including quad rooms, family rooms and a junior suite that sleeps five. A full breakfast is included from 6:30 AM, and there’s a small outdoor pool and a 24-hour front desk.

Rooms start around $65 a night. Some rates include one free airport trip or free parking, so check what yours covers.

12. Hotel Santa Maria Inn

Santa Maria Inn is a simple, family-run hotel in Río Segundo, about 2.5 km from the terminal. It’s a cheap, quiet bed for one night, nothing more.

Rooms run from doubles to a family room that sleeps six, and a continental breakfast is included from 7 AM. The hotel offers a free drop-off to the airport between 7 AM and noon, on request.

Rooms start around $65 a night. Fair warning: several recent guests say the shuttle didn’t turn up, so book a taxi as a backup for an early flight.

13. Airport Costa Rica B&B

Airport Costa Rica B&B is a tiny bed and breakfast in Río Segundo, about 2.5 km from the airport. There are only four rooms, set around a tropical garden that makes it feel far from the runway.

Rooms have a private bathroom and air conditioning. Breakfast costs extra, about $5, and it’s worth it after a long flight.

Rates run about $68 to $100 a night. With so few rooms, book early, and ask about an airport pickup when you do.

14. Alajuela Backpackers Airport Hostel

Alajuela Backpackers is the budget pick, in central Alajuela across from Parque de los Niños. Dorms have four beds and their own bathroom, the rooms have air conditioning, and reception is open 24 hours.

The airport shuttle is free. Departures leave at 4:10, 5:30, 8:40, 10:15 and 11:30 AM, and pickups are free 4 AM to 10 PM. After 10 PM, a taxi costs about $6 to $8.

Dorm beds start around $14 and private rooms around $24, before the 13% tax. Send your flight details at least 24 hours ahead so they can confirm your pickup.

15. Airport Traveler’s Home

Airport Traveler’s Home is a small, laid-back guesthouse in Ciruelas, about 4 km from the airport. Rooms are simple cabins and doubles set around a garden, with a shared kitchen and a terrace.

There’s no free shuttle, but the hosts can arrange one for a fee, and one guest paid about $17. The front desk is open 2 PM to 10 PM, and it’s cash only.

Rooms average around $25 a night. Reviews of the shared bathrooms are mixed, so ask for a room with its own bathroom.

Which Hotel Near San José Airport Should You Book?

For a short night before an early flight, pick a hotel with a 24-hour shuttle. The Hampton and Holiday Inn Express are both about 1 km from the terminal, and the Courtyard’s shuttle runs until 12:45 AM.

For a proper first or last night, head for the hills. Xandari and Finca Rosa Blanca are the splurges, and Buena Vista Chic gives you views and a free shuttle for less.

Families do well in Cariari, where both hotels have pools, or at Hotel Robledal with its kids’ pool. On a budget, Alajuela Backpackers has beds from about $14 with free airport runs. La Guaria Inn has private rooms with breakfast from about $65.
