How Far Is La Fortuna From San Jose Airport?
La Fortuna is about 115 to 130 km from San Jose airport by road. Most drivers and shuttles head west on Route 1, then turn north on Route 702 through San Ramón, La Tigra and Chachagua.
It’s paved the whole way, but it’s a mountain road with plenty of curves. Plan on about 3 hours without long stops.
The other main route goes through Naranjo, Zarcero and Ciudad Quesada on Route 141. It’s around 140 km and a little slower, though Zarcero’s topiary garden makes a nice stretch break.
Prices shift a little by company and season, but this is roughly what each option costs:
| Option | Price | Time | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shared shuttle | $65 to $95 per person | 3.5 to 4 hours | Solo and couples |
| Private transfer | From about $180 per van | About 3 hours | Groups and late flights |
| Public bus | About ₡4,200 ($9), plus a taxi to the terminal | 4.5 to 5 hours | Tight budgets |
| Rental car | Daily rate, fuel and insurance | About 3 hours | Exploring around Arenal |
| Flight to La Fortuna | About $95 to $155 | 30 minutes, plus check-in | Short trips |
Land by early afternoon and all five get you there the same day. The real differences are cost, comfort and how much waiting you’re willing to do.
Shared Shuttle From San Jose Airport to La Fortuna
A shared shuttle is what most people pick, and for good reason. A driver meets you outside arrivals, loads your bags and drops you at your hotel door in La Fortuna.
Expect to pay $65 to $95 per person. Tropical Tours charges $95 plus 13% tax and leaves the airport at 7:45 AM and 2:15 PM. Ride CR leaves at 7 AM and 1:30 PM, and Interbus runs a morning and an early afternoon van too.
The trip takes 3.5 to 4 hours, since the van stops at other hotels along the way. Most companies build in a short coffee and bathroom stop.
Book at least 2 days ahead, and a week ahead over Christmas and Easter. The one catch is timing. Land after about 2 PM and you can miss the last van of the day.

Private Transfer From San Jose Airport to La Fortuna
A private transfer costs more, but it runs on your schedule, not the van’s. The driver tracks your flight, waits in arrivals with a sign and leaves the moment you’re ready.
Prices start around $180 for the van. Tropical Tours charges $180 plus tax for up to 4 people, then $25 for each extra person. Late-night pickups can add up to $50. Other companies charge $200 to $300, depending on the vehicle.
For a group of four, $180 works out to $45 each before tax, less than four shuttle seats. Solo or as a couple, the shared shuttle is the better deal.
It’s also the easy way to add a stop, like La Paz Waterfall Gardens or a coffee farm. Agree on it when you book, since longer stops cost extra.
