How Far Is Nosara From San Jose Airport?

Nosara is about 250 km from San Jose airport by road. Private drivers do it in about 4.5 hours, and 5 to 6 hours with a stop or two.

The usual route crosses the Friendship Bridge over the Tempisque River to Nicoya, then heads toward Sámara. Just before Sámara, you turn right onto a short connector road, then north through Garza to Playa Guiones.

Prices shift a little by company and season, but this is roughly what each option costs:

Land by early afternoon and you can still arrive the same day by road. Land later, and flying or a night near the airport makes more sense.

Shared Shuttle From San Jose Airport to Nosara

A shared shuttle is the easy pick for one or two people. A driver meets you outside arrivals and drops you at your hotel in Nosara.

Prices vary more on this route than most. Tropical Tours charges $120 per person and leaves the airport at 7:45 AM, arriving about 1:15 PM. Interbus costs about $70 to $105 and takes 6.5 to 7 hours, and a few smaller companies charge up to $150.

Most shuttles leave in the morning, so a flight that lands after lunch can leave you without one until the next day.

Book 2 to 3 days ahead, and a week ahead over Christmas and Easter. Check the pickup is at the airport and not a hotel in San Jose.

Private Transfer From San Jose Airport to Nosara

A private transfer costs more, but it leaves when you land and goes straight to your hotel. The driver tracks your flight and waits in arrivals with a sign.

Prices run about $305 to $455 for the vehicle. Tropical Tours charges $340 for up to 4 people, then $25 for each extra person. Two Weeks in Costa Rica charges $399 plus tax for up to 8.

For a group of four, $340 works out to $85 each, cheaper than four seats on most shuttles. For a family landing in the afternoon, it’s the least stressful way to do it.

The trip takes about 4.5 hours of driving, and most drivers stop once for food and a bathroom break.

Bus From San Jose to Nosara

The bus is the budget pick, at about ₡5,135, roughly $11. Transporte Inteligente de Guanacaste (TIG) runs it from its terminal on Paseo Colón. It’s about 150 meters west of the Hospital Nacional de Niños in downtown San Jose.

Direct buses leave at 5:30 AM and 3 PM, and the ride takes about 7 hours. You can buy tickets at tiguanacaste.com or at the terminal.

No bus leaves from the airport, and the 5:30 AM start means a night in San Jose first. The 3 PM bus arrives well after dark.

Missed both? Take a TIG bus to Nicoya, which runs several times a day. Then catch a local Traroc bus to Nosara, about ₡2,250 and 1 hour 40 minutes. Older guides mention Alfaro and Terminal 7-10, but both are out of date.

Driving From San Jose Airport to Nosara

Driving gives you the most freedom, and Nosara is spread out enough that a car helps. From the airport, head west to the coast and north on Route 1 to Limonal. Then cross the Friendship Bridge to Nicoya.

From Nicoya, take Route 150 toward Sámara for about 30 km. Turn right at the gas station just before Sámara onto the 8.6 km connector to Barco Quebrado. Then go north on Route 160 through Garza to Playa Guiones.

That connector is paved but full of potholes, so take it slow. The roads inside Playa Guiones and up to Playa Pelada are still dirt.

A high-clearance SUV is the safe pick, and a 4×4 helps in rainy season, May to November. Skip the coastal road from Sámara or Ostional, which has river crossings. Our guide to renting a car in Costa Rica covers the insurance and real costs.

Flying From San Jose Airport to Nosara

Flying is the fastest way to Nosara by far. Sansa flies from San Jose airport to Nosara’s small airstrip (NOB) in about 45 minutes. In high season, there are up to four flights a day.

Costa Rica Green Airways flies the route too, leaving San Jose at 7:45 AM, 9:45 AM and 2:15 PM. One-way fares on both run about $90 to $180.

Luggage is the catch. Sansa’s cheaper fares include about 30 pounds (14 kg) of checked luggage, and Green Airways’ basic fare is about the same.

The airstrip is a short taxi ride from Playa Guiones. Pick a morning flight, since afternoon storms cause delays.

Flying Into Liberia Instead of San Jose

Liberia airport (LIR) is much closer to Nosara, about 130 km and 2.5 to 3 hours by road. For a trip that’s mostly Nosara and the Guanacaste coast, it saves you half a day.

Tropical Tours runs a shared shuttle from Liberia for $50 per person, at 9 AM and 3 PM. A private one costs $180 for up to 4 people. Green Airways also flies Liberia to Nosara three times a day.

Flights into Liberia sometimes cost more than San Jose, so compare both before you book. When your trip also covers La Fortuna or Monteverde, San Jose still makes more sense.

Nosara Town vs Playa Guiones

Nosara isn’t one spot. Playa Guiones is the long surf beach in the south, where most hotels, yoga studios and restaurants are. Playa Pelada is smaller and quieter, with rocky tide pools.

The village of Nosara itself is about 6 km inland from Guiones. It has the gas station, a few ATMs and the local shops.

Typing only “Nosara” into a map can send you to the village instead of the beach. Save your hotel’s exact location before you leave the airport, since phone signal fades on the last stretch.

Best Way to Get From San Jose Airport to Nosara

Flying is the best way to get to Nosara when you can pack light. It takes about 2 hours door to door, against 5 to 6 by road.

By road, a shared shuttle suits most people traveling solo or as a couple. Book a private transfer for groups of four or more, families and afternoon arrivals.

Rent a car when you plan to explore more of the coast, like Sámara or the turtle beach at Ostional. And for a Nosara-only trip, fly into Liberia if you still can.
