Getting to Nosara From San José
San José is where most people start, and it’s the longest trip. By road, plan on 5 to 6 hours, and a little more from downtown once you add city traffic.
Shared shuttles cost about $70 to $150 per person. Tropical Tours charges $120 and leaves the airport at 7:45 AM. Private transfers run about $305 to $455 for the vehicle.
The TIG bus is the budget pick at about $11, with direct buses at 5:30 AM and 3 PM. Our San Jose airport to Nosara guide covers every option from the capital in detail.

Flying to Nosara
Flying is the fastest way to get to Nosara by far. Sansa flies from San José airport in about 45 minutes and from Liberia in about 30. Costa Rica Green Airways flies both routes too.
Green Airways leaves San José at 7:45 AM, 9:45 AM and 2:15 PM. From Liberia, it leaves at 9:30 AM, 11:30 AM and 4 PM. One-way fares run about $90 to $180 on both airlines, and times change, so check when you book.
Pack light. Basic fares include about 30 pounds (14 kg) of checked luggage. Sansa takes surfboards up to 6.7 feet for about $40 each way.
The airstrip is in Nosara village, about 15 minutes from Playa Guiones by taxi. Book a morning flight when you can, since afternoon storms cause delays.

Getting to Nosara From Liberia Airport
Liberia airport (LIR) is the closest international airport to Nosara, about 130 km away. By road, it takes 2.5 to 3 hours, which saves you half a day compared with San José.
Tropical Tours runs a shared shuttle for $50 per person at 9 AM and 3 PM. A private one costs $180 for up to 4 people. Bridge work on Route 21 near Liberia can slow traffic, so leave a little extra time.
No bus leaves from the airport. From Liberia town, buses to Nicoya run about every half hour, and you change there for the Nosara bus.
Getting to Nosara From Tamarindo
Tamarindo to Nosara takes about 3 hours on the paved inland route, through Santa Cruz and Nicoya. It looks shorter on the map, but the coast road is a different story.
The coastal route through Ostional is about 70 km of mostly dirt, with river crossings and no gas stations. Drive it only in the dry season, roughly February to April, and never after heavy rain. Rental insurance won’t cover water damage.
Tropical Tours runs a shared shuttle for $50 at 8 AM and 2:15 PM, and a private one for $160. By bus, you change in Santa Cruz and Nicoya, and the trip takes 5 to 6 hours.

Getting to Nosara From Sámara
Sámara is Nosara’s closest beach neighbor, about 30 km south. The drive takes about 45 minutes on Route 150, the paved connector and Route 160 through Garza.
There’s no direct bus, so most people take a taxi or a private shuttle. Private vans start around $75 for up to 6 people.
Waze sometimes suggests a shorter beach road with a river crossing. Skip it in the rainy season, May to November.
Getting to Nosara From Santa Teresa and Montezuma
Santa Teresa and Montezuma are on the same peninsula, but the trip to Nosara still takes 5 to 6 hours. The direct way follows the coast on dirt roads, with several river crossings.
Tropical Tours runs a shared shuttle for $60 per person at 6:30 AM and 3 PM, and a private van for $260. The drivers know which rivers are safe to cross that day.
Driving yourself, some of these rivers can only be crossed in the dry season. In the wet months, the paved way round through Paquera and Nicoya avoids them, but it adds hours.
Getting to Nosara From La Fortuna
La Fortuna to Nosara takes about 6 hours by shuttle, around Lake Arenal and over the Friendship Bridge to Nicoya. Driving yourself takes 5 to 6 hours.
Shared shuttles cost about $60 to $90 per person, and most leave around 7:30 AM. Private vans run about $290 to $360 for the vehicle.
From Monteverde, shared seats are harder to find, and private vans cost about $260. Either way, it’s a long day, so a night in Sámara or Tamarindo on the way is worth thinking about.
Taking the Bus to Nosara
The bus is the cheapest way to get to Nosara. TIG runs a direct bus from its terminal on Paseo Colón in San José at 5:30 AM and 3 PM. It costs about ₡5,100, roughly $11.
The trip takes 6 to 7 hours, and you can buy tickets at tiguanacaste.com or the terminal. The bus doesn’t stop at the airport.
From anywhere else, you go through Nicoya. Traroc buses run Nicoya to Nosara at 4:45 AM, 10 AM, 12:30 PM, 3:30 PM and 5:30 PM, Monday to Saturday. On Sunday, there’s no 4:45 AM bus.
The ride takes 1.5 to 2 hours and costs about ₡2,200. For Playa Guiones, ask the driver to let you off near Café de Paris.
Driving to Nosara
Driving gives you the most freedom, and Nosara is spread out enough that a car helps. From San José or Liberia, head for the Friendship Bridge over the Tempisque River, then Nicoya.
From Nicoya, take Route 150 toward Sámara. Turn right at the gas station just before Sámara onto the 8.6 km connector, then go north on Route 160 through Garza.
The connector is paved but badly potholed, so a high-clearance SUV is the safe pick, and a 4×4 helps May to November. Skip the coastal dirt routes in the rainy season.
The Puntarenas to Playa Naranjo ferry doesn’t save time. The whole trip ends up a little longer than driving over the bridge. Our guide to renting a car in Costa Rica covers costs and insurance.

Getting Around Nosara
Nosara isn’t one compact town. Playa Guiones is the surf beach with most hotels and restaurants. Playa Pelada is the quieter beach to the north, and Nosara village is about 6 km inland.
Tuk-tuks work as taxis around town, and short rides are cheap. Plenty of people rent an ATV or a golf cart instead, for about $60 to $80 a day.
The roads inside Guiones and up to Playa Pelada are dirt. They’re dusty in the dry season and muddy in the wet one.

Flying is the best way to get to Nosara when you can pack light. It takes 30 to 45 minutes from San José or Liberia, against hours on the road.
