How Far Is Tamarindo From San Jose?

Tamarindo is about 250 to 260 km from downtown San Jose by road. The usual route heads west on Route 27, then north on Route 1 to Limonal. From there, you cross the Friendship Bridge to Nicoya. The last leg runs through Santa Cruz to the coast.

It’s paved the whole way, and a regular car handles it fine. Plan on 4.5 to 5 hours of driving, plus a stop or two. Roadworks between Barranca and Limonal, where Route 1 is being widened, can add an hour on busy days.

Prices shift a little by company and season, but this is roughly what each option costs from downtown:

From downtown, the bus is the easiest it’ll ever be, since its terminal is right in the city.

Leaving From Downtown San Jose vs the Airport

San Jose and its airport aren’t the same place. Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) is in Alajuela, about 20 to 25 minutes from downtown, and longer at rush hour.

Staying at a downtown hotel, you can ignore the airport. The bus terminal is in the city, and shared shuttles collect passengers at hotels around San Jose.

The airport only matters for a domestic flight or a rental car from an airport counter. Both add that drive.

Watch the rush hours, roughly 6 to 8:30 AM and 4 to 6:30 PM. A 10-minute taxi ride to the terminal can take 40 then, which hurts with a fixed departure.

Bus From San Jose to Tamarindo

The bus is the budget pick, and from downtown it’s an easy one. Transporte Inteligente de Guanacaste (TIG) runs the route from its own terminal on Paseo Colón. It’s about 150 meters west of the Hospital Nacional de Niños.

Buses leave at about 8:30 AM and 3:30 PM via the Friendship Bridge, and 11:30 AM and 4 PM via Liberia. The fare is about ₡8,200, roughly $18, and the ride takes 5 to 6 hours.

You can buy tickets and pick seats online at tiguanacaste.com, or at the window. Older guides mention Alfaro, Tralapa or Terminal 7-10, but all of that is out of date.

Take a taxi to the terminal with luggage, even when it’s close. Get a ticket for any bag that goes in the hold, and watch it go in before you board.

Shared Shuttle From San Jose to Tamarindo

A shared shuttle is the comfortable middle ground. The van picks you up at your hotel and drops you at your door in Tamarindo, with a stop on the way.

Expect to pay $60 to $95 per person. Tropical Tours charges $95 from the airport, and Interbus and a few smaller companies charge closer to $60 to $75.

The van collects people across the city before it heads out, so pickup times are a window, not an exact time. Be out front a few minutes early.

Book 2 to 3 days ahead, and a week ahead over Christmas and Easter. Surfboards cost extra on most shuttles, about $15 to $20 per board.

Private Transfer From San Jose to Tamarindo

A private transfer costs more, but it leaves when you want and makes no other stops. It suits groups, families and anyone carrying surfboards.

Prices run about $275 to $475 for the vehicle. Tropical Tours charges $340 from the airport for up to 4 people, then $25 for each extra person, with surfboards included.

For four people, $340 works out to $85 each, cheaper than four shuttle seats at the top price. Solo or as a couple, the shared shuttle or the bus is the better deal.

Ask about extra fees for very early or late pickups, since some companies charge about $50 for those.

From downtown, take Route 27 west toward Caldera. Its four main toll booths come to about ₡2,300, roughly $5, and most take colones and cards. Rental cars rarely have a toll tag, so stay out of the Quick Pass lanes.

Renting from a downtown office saves the airport fees, but the choice of cars is smaller and offices close earlier. Pick the car up the evening before, so you can leave before the morning rush.

The sun sets around 5:15 to 6:10 PM, depending on the month, so aim to arrive before dark. Our guide to renting a car in Costa Rica covers the insurance and real costs.

Flying From San Jose to Tamarindo

Sansa flies from San Jose airport to Tamarindo’s small airstrip (TNO) in about 50 minutes. One-way fares run about $110 to $190, depending on the date and fare type.

From downtown, add the 20 to 25 minute ride to the airport and at least an hour for check-in. Door to door, that’s about 3 hours, still the fastest option.

Cheaper fares include about 30 pounds (14 kg) of checked luggage, and surfboards cost from $40 per flight. Pick a morning flight, since afternoon storms cause delays.

Best Way to Get From San Jose to Tamarindo

From a downtown hotel, the bus is the best value by far. It costs around $18, leaves from the city and gets you there in 5 to 6 hours.

Pick a shared shuttle when you’d rather have door-to-door service, and a private transfer for groups of four or more. Rent a car when you plan to explore more of Guanacaste.

Fly only when you’re short on days and packing light.
