How Far Is Tamarindo From San Jose Airport?
Tamarindo is about 250 km from San Jose airport by road. The usual route heads west toward Puntarenas, then north on Route 1 to Limonal. From there, you cross the Friendship Bridge to Nicoya. The last leg runs through Santa Cruz to the coast.
It’s paved all the way, so a regular car is fine. Plan on 4 to 5 hours of driving, plus a stop or two. Roadworks between Barranca and Limonal, where Route 1 is being widened, can add an hour on busy days.
Prices shift a little by company and season, but this is roughly what each option costs from the airport:
| Option | Price | Time | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shared shuttle | $60 to $95 per person | About 5.5 hours | Solo and couples |
| Private transfer | $275 to $475 per vehicle | 4.5 to 5 hours | Groups and families |
| Public bus | About ₡8,200 ($18), plus a taxi to the terminal | 5 to 6 hours | Tight budgets |
| Rental car | Daily rate, fuel and about $5 in tolls | 4 to 5 hours | Exploring Guanacaste |
| Flight to Tamarindo | About $110 to $190 | 50 minutes, plus check-in | Short trips |
All five get you there the same day if you land by early afternoon. The bigger question is which airport you land at.
Should You Fly Into Liberia Instead of San Jose?
For a Tamarindo-only trip, Liberia airport (LIR) is the better pick. It’s about 65 to 80 km from Tamarindo, a 1 to 1.5 hour drive, against 4 to 5 hours from San Jose.
Shared shuttles from Liberia cost about $30 to $50 per person, and private ones about $100 to $150. That alone can cover the difference in airfare.
San Jose still makes sense when your trip also covers La Fortuna, Monteverde or Manuel Antonio. Flying into Liberia then means backtracking across the country later.
